THE MODERN CEREMONY

The ceremony is based on a script supported by historical sources. Its representation takes place in the city’s most iconic locations, such as Qoricancha (Temple of the Sun), Auqaypata (present-day Main Square), and the esplanade of Saqsaywaman, where the central rituals unfold.

Start of the Staging

In the majestic Qoricancha, spiritual center of the Tawantinsuyu, the Willka Nina was performed: a sacred fire lit with the Sun’s rays concentrated in a gold disc on vicuña fiber. Today, the Inti Raymi revives this ritual at 9 AM, where the Inca and his court pay homage to the god Inti. Then, a procession of 800 artists in typical costumes advances to the rhythm of pututos, tinyas and quenas through the streets of Cusco, gathering thousands in a spectacle of Inca heritage.

(Auqaypata)

In Inca times, Cusco’s Plaza de Armas hosted solemn ceremonies on its ushnu platform, where warriors pledged loyalty to the Sun and Empire. Today’s Inti Raymi recreates this grandeur as the Inca enters the packed square to perform the coca ritual at a ceremonial waka. The poignant ‘Encounter of Times’ occurs when the mayor receives the khipu – symbolizing Munay, Yachay, and Llank’ay – blending ancient traditions with modern celebration in Peru’s most iconic festival.

Esplanade

In Saqsaywaman, the Inti Raymi begins with the arrival of Sinchi and the four Suyos to the ushnu, followed by ñustas, aqllas and the Inca in his golden litter. After the chant to the Sun and the regional offerings, the sacred rituals of chicha, fire, llama sacrifice and ceremonial bread are performed. The ceremony culminates with a burst of joy: actors and spectators merge in dances, while the echo of pututos and quenas renews the pact between the Andean sky and its people.
