Cusco Machu Picchu, in Cusco, is undoubtedly one of the favorite destinations of any national or foreign tourist. We share some curiosities of this ancient Inca citadel so admired by many.

  1. Machu Picchu means “Old Mountain”.

  1. Its majestic architecture comprises around 140 structures throughout the citadel.

  2. It was built by the Inca Pachacútec in the year 1460.

  3. After having been forgotten, in 1911 the American Hiram Bingham arrived at Machu Picchu on an expedition and spread the place around the world.

  1. Its main buildings are those of Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun and the Temple of the Three Windows.

  1. It is the best known symbol of the Inca Empire, sometimes called the “Lost City of the Incas”.

  2. In 1913 it received world attention, when the National Geographic Society magazine devoted all its circulation in the month of April to the newly rediscovered city.

  3. It is one of the 7 wonders of the world, World Heritage Site, Historical Sanctuary of Peru and probably the most important Archaeological Site in Latin America

  1. When it was found by Bingham, there were people living there and even some ancient mummies.

  2. It is located 2,400 meters above sea level.
